How amortization works

Each monthly payment on a fixed-rate loan is the same, but the mix changes over time. Early payments are mostly interest; later payments are mostly principal. Extra principal payments reduce the balance sooner, which cuts the total interest and can take years off the loan. Check with your servicer that extra payments are applied to principal.
